William Shatner Appreciation Day: The Horror

Of course, what is Shatner without the horrific music. His rendering of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” is, as Wheels points out, a musical abomination.

But does it compare to his live take on Elton John’s “Rocket Man”?

Notable not only for it’s own badness, but also for one of Stewie’s many brilliant moments on Family Guy.

Cause he’s a rock-it man…

Oh, that’s lovely! The ruffled cuffs and shirt-front, the BIG tie, the nonchalont handling of the cigarette, the toupee ... it all adds up to an inimitable experience.

I couldn’t hear the sound on the Family Guy clip, though. Have to try later.

And, if you really want to compare (audio, at least) here’s a student animation project for “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.”

My boss just stopped in, wondering why I was laughing so damned hard.

That is beautiful.

When I was but a wee lad I actually saw Shatner sing Rocket Man when it first aired. I forget what the actual program was but I’ve never forgotten that performance.

Oh, I wish I had seen that air live.

I saw Shatner ‘rap’ Rocketman live (kinda) on TV in 1977 ir 78 and it remained for years the most remarkably bad thing I had ever seen. I think it still is but only because I have not yet watched the Lucy in the Sky clip. I’m with Tyler Durden II, if i had to fight any celebrity, I’d fight Shatner, and beat him bloody, just for the Rocketman thing.

Shatner fever must be in the air. My wife loves that lawyer show (Boston Legal?) with him, and last night I showed her that clip for the first time. She not only enjoyed it, she was genuinely touched by it.

Now I’m starting to believe she’s touched.
