Why isn’t the ACLU doing anything about this?

Has the Patriot Act been taken a step too far? Paxety reprints an editorial from the Miami Herald about what is going on down south. It’s not right. Why isn’t the ACLU doing anything about this?

[The Government’s] latest crackdown targets so-called “anti-social” youths, most of them black. Since January more than 400 people have been imprisoned, almost every one of them black.

The rationale for the arrests is that this is a “pre-offense security measure,” for not complying with the “norms of ... morality.” This explains why there are no charges filed. Even the [Government] can’t file a charge for a crime that has not been committed—but they can and do arrest you just in case.

I might be an evil Republican, but this kind of thing sickens me. It’s not what America is supposed to be. I don’t understand why the ACLU hasn’t done anything about this.

Update: The full editorial, without the need to register, is available at Cubanet.

I guess it would help if I mentioned that these atrocities are taking place in Hollywood’s favorite vacation destination—Cuba. I guess Hollywood liberals prefer not to see too many black faces around the swimming pool in Fidel’s island paradise. At least they have free healthcare.

Actually, we should all be speaking up against it. But it isn’t happening here, it’s happening in Cuba.

Somehow, that’s a lot less surprising.

Why isn’t the American Civil Liberties Union doing anything about oppression in Cuba?  I would think the answer is obvious.

Further, given that I - an avid newsreader - had not heard about this action, I’m hardly going to reprimand a celebrity for not having either.  I’m also afraid that the “race card” doesn’t quite work, unless Mumia was just a very tan whitey.

Hey andy,

Are you saying that if it ain’t in the New York Times it didn’t happen? That’s a stupid rhetorical question, I know that’s not how you think. I do wonder though if you think that now the Miami Herald has published this editorial the Hollywood elite will start holding vigils and fundraisers, and do a movie about the real Cuba.

Was I race baiting? Of course I was. I tried to be as blatant about it as possible. Cuba has repressed and discriminated against blacks ever since Fidel “liberated” Cuba. When the Left, always eager to cry racism at the drop of a backwards baseball cap, ignores the reality of Cuba they are showing that they don’t really care about freedom, race, equality, or quality of life issues at all. And, that’s the point I was trying to get across.

And when the majority of the right cries about freedom and democracy and liberation from oppression in Iraq, while ignoring the plight of millions of others around the world, they clearly don’t care about freedom, democracy, or liberation.

Your argument doesn’t follow (and neither does my counter-example, which is my point).
