What?
“I forgot he was black tonight.”
What the hell does that mean? Listening to the audio, it’s even worse because it seems to indicate that Chris Matthews was somehow surprised that a black man could stand and talk about a wide range of subjects, could be in front of a “bunch of other white people”, could be so “in tune” with American life that he might somehow not sound black.
Or something.
What was he thinking?
If, as Matthews suggests, we’ve really entered a post-racial period, can’t we dispense with talking about race and get to talking about policies?

It means if he’d said that on Fox News he’d be burning in effigy on Rupert Murdoch’s front lawn. It means if Brit Hume had said it he’d have already disappeared into extraordinary rendition. It means he figured out that “tingle up my leg” was too much of a gift to us reich-wingers, but he hasn’t figured out that anything he might say about Obama would be a gift to us reich-wingers.
lso, I can’ be the only one who appreciates the irony of the most powerful man in the free world using a State of the Union speech to complain about The Man keeping him down.
Matthew’s unconsciously trying to get more legs out of the Harry Reid comment.
Policies are too intellectual, lets just keep the gossip fires stirred.
