Video iPod

I just watched Queens of the Stone Age’s video for “No One Knows” (brilliant freakin’ song) on a coworkers brand spankin’ new video iPod and have some thoughts.

First: If they sold it at a premium, no one would want it. Not because it doesn’t work well, but because it isn’t that compelling of a feature. At least, it isn’t until more content is easily available for the little sucker.

Second: The screen and picture quality are great. On a long flight, I would love to have one of these little guys tucked away to make the time go by quicker.

Third: My coworker has ripped full movies from DVDs and has them stored on the new iPod. Not good movies (David Duchovny’s lamentable House of D, for instance), but he has full freakin’ movies on the thing. He plans to keep an entire library of movies available for when he goes to his family’s cabin up in the mountains instead of lugging DVDs back and forth. I’m loving this thing.

Fourth: I can’t verify this because he didn’t bring in the TV cable, but he says that while the quality isn’t quite up to DVD standards, the video quality is actually pretty good. I had worried about the low resolution (lower by a bit than standard TV resolution), but he says that it isn’t that noticeable.

Now, back to point one: Although it wouldn’t be compelling now, I have to think that Apple has a small, outside chance of making a mini video player something that everyone will want to have. The question is how easy will it be to come up with content for the customers to fill up those giant hard drives?

I thought that my Nano lust couldn’t be topped, but this brand new, black, video capable iPod with 60 gigs of storage in a tiny little box just pushed me over the edge. If Santa really loved me, he’d bring me one of these for Christmas.

Gosh I want one for Christmas SO bad.  I have a shuffle that is all but worn out.  As a result I have been to iTunes a lot.  What helps me to stave off the tech envy is that you can go to iTunes and download videos, tv shows, audio books and all of that to your laptop or pc.

I travel a lot and missed a couple of episodes of LOST.  I bought the episodes for $1.99 a piece and got to watch them commercial free.  I also bought the PIXAR video of the funny blue birds for $1.99.

Because I travel a lot, I really really would like the new iPod Video.

Heheh. I got that same Pixar video. I’ll probably eventually buy all of them, but I thought that was the funniest of the bunch.

I’m not going to be home tonight, so I found myself wishing that they sold episodes of House in the store--I would buy it as soon as it was available. This is precisely why growing the content is going to be so important, though; right now they have just a couple of TV shows and that isn’t nearly enough to make the service addictive to most people.

DVR, z.  It’s available right now, and after the monthly service fee you can record and watch all the House you want for free.

True, but the monthly service fee is far more than the single episode fee for shows on iTMS (only $1.99). And there’s this whole laziness factor, too…

I don’t believe in Santa.  Good Republican girl that I am, I have decided that he would be a liberal Democrat if he were real- you know, giving things away to people who haven’t earned them.  Thus, I believe in the power of cash...and I trust The Man in Brown that drives a matching big brown truck:  UPS :D

Randy, Z, if I had the cash, I ask The Man in Brown to send your wishes your way.

Oh but Satan is...I mean Santa is real smile.

Maybe we should start a protest to demand our iPod rights be funded by government welfare to assure that the masses are sufficiently numbed during travel and ...

During College Mid-terms ...
During really boring meetings at work ...
During Adam Carolla’s new shows ...
During Senate Confirmation hearings ...

The Great Satan...I mean Santa...being “The Man” and all shouldn’t have a problem with it.

Thanks for the good thoughts Rae.

I have been considering downloading something, some kind of video, just to do it.  I find myself being really cheap though and chicken out due to fear of a bad stream, er, well, whatever it would be called.

What’s the quality of a video watched via iTunes on the computer?
