That’s An Easy One
This is about all I have to say about Michele’s poll concerning the 100 greatest punk songs of all freakin’ time:
“Mommy’s Little Monster.”
Some will argue for SOD or Husker Du or The Damned. I can respect that. Some will instinctively reach for The Clash or MC5, which is fine. But they’re wrong. It’s definitely “Mommy’s Little Monster.”
Definitely...
While we’re at it, though, Clutch is overrated and I don’t understand how “Blitzkrieg Bop” failed to make the cut. Something from Killing Joke would have been nice, too. Although I suppose they aren’t really a punk band, I would put “Wardance” or even “This Tribal Antidote” up against the majority of songs on that list.

Comments & Trackbacks
Clutch is......overrated? OVERRATED? You have dropped the gloves, my man.
I’m good at making friends.
Well, you do have a point with Killing Joke, so I’ll give you that.
I have to admit to having a serious bias for the older bands and that probably colors the way my list would look. Of course, that might just be a sign of me growing old…
Still, it’s a great variety of styles and sounds. Impressive even where I don’t agree with the choices.
Since I’ve heard only 1 and maybe 1/4th of these tunes (that I can remember), I have no opinion. But I like the Clash—what I’ve heard of them. Actually, a way long time ago, I saw a TV documentary on punk, or maybe on Sid Vicious (Sid and Nancy?), so it’s possible I’ve heard a few more. And that’s where I heard maybe 1/4th of ‘God Save the Queen’. Some of the band names are familiar to me—fewer than 10.
Long live Mott the Hoople!
All I have to say about the “quality” of this list:
7. Sleater Kinney - Dig Me Out
Above The Clash (The only band that matters), The Stooges, The Ramones and the Pistols.
Alrighty then. I think we’re done here.
Actually, I was wondering what Sleater Kinney was doing on the list at all, to tell the truth. Not my idea of what constitutes punk. And I’m still disappointed that only one Ramones tune found its way onto the list. But the list did have MC5 and the Damned on it--both worthy of inclusion.
So, anyway, long live Mott the Hoople!
Forgot my six-string razor
And hit the sky
Halfway to Memphis
‘fore I realized
Some spade said
“Rock and Rollers,
You’re all the same
Man that’s your instrument”
I felt ... so ashamed
Yes, that’s from memory.
Hmmm. I think I’ll fire up the turntable.
So, any plans for a summer RMBB? And how are you, David?
