Sad Day for Metal Fans: DIo has Died
Fans of Sabbath, Rainbow, and Dio will all be mourning today.
Ronnie James Dio, legendary frontman of Dio, Black Sabbath, and Rainbow, passed away peacefully, according to his wife, today at 7:45 a.m. He was 67. The legendary metal vocalist, born Ronald James Padavona, was diagnosed with stomach cancer in November, forcing him to cancel shows with Heaven & Hell—the name of the Sabbath lineup he’d been fronting since 2006.

In my pantheon of music gods Dio was my Mark Lanegan. \m/
I know. I almost emailed you to let you know, but I figured that, first, you probably had heard before I did, and, second, if I was wrong, I didn’t want to be the to tell you.
i didn’t even know he was in the hospital until I heard the false rumors yesterday. Still, he had a reasonably long life and he left a legacy of great music.
He had so much more music to give too.
I don’t consider myself a metalhead, but I can certainly appreciate Dio. I’m more aware of him from his days with Rainbow than anywhere else, and to me, Sabbath wasn’t Sabbath without Ozzy—nothing against Ronnie there. But Blackmore and Dio together should have been much bigger.
