President Bush Answers the Call of the Zomby

In my last post I pondered America’s involvement in helping Cuba find a path to freedom should Castro die. Apparently, President Bush wanted me to know that he has a plan in place. Which is, of course, why he chose a Spanish language radio station to discuss the issue.

“If Fidel Castro were to move on because of natural causes, we’ve got a plan in place to help the people of Cuba understand there’s a better way than the system in which they’ve been living under,” he told WAQI- AM Radio Mambi, a Spanish-language radio station. “No one knows when Fidel Castro will move on. In my judgment, that’s the work of the Almighty.”

The president apparently was referring to a recently updated plan that calls for diplomacy enlisting Cuban citizens and other nations to demand a new government after Castro dies. The plan, released last month by the Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba, recommends that the United States spend $80 million over two years for food and other aid to Cuba to encourage multiparty elections, free markets and democratic institutions.

I have no idea what Castro’s health situation is, but there is a giddiness in the air at the thought of his passing.

Update: Elephants in Academia (great name for a site, it should be noted) goes looking for reactions from the left. I try not to say bad things about TalkLeft because I respect the help she’s given a friend who is most certainly in need, but the reaction on her site made my eyes roll back with such force that it took three violent co-workers and a plunger to get me seeing straight again.

What I think they should do is hang out with those Cubans that were left behind first; before implementing any policy. I am not speaking about the communist. Not listen to the Cuban exile. There is probably a difference in the native priorities than the Cuban exile here. If I may say, there even may be racial issue here. Would there have been sanctions if those left behind weren’t mostly black? I not saying they were, but could be perceived as such. Is there colorism in the Cuban exile community? The US should not do anything that would push the native apart from the exile. I had some sense the Castro was courting the US before his total embracement of communism. I don’t know what our agenda was at that time. Saving Baptista, a despot under our control? I do not hope anyone thinks that I think Castro is any good. But communism was not the only evil that has afflicted Cuba.

I think where there has been slavery of the African, colorism exist. For those that don’t know, the lighter the skin, the straighter the hair is suppose to give the better advantage. Whites have given advantage based on degrees of color, thus keeping a division between peoples of sub-Saharan African decent. Oddly enough, we keep perpetuating the system too.

Yeah, my Venezuelan GF totally loves all those Cuban doctors who went there and put Venezuelan doctors out of work.  They are also part of the military of Cuba so, you know, they got that going for them as well.

And I know that I spelled Venezuelan wrong...so there

I am all for a free Cuba but the partying seems premature.  Even if he dies… will there be enough of a desire and organized effort to revolt against the tyranny of the Castro brothers?
