Might I Need to Trade In for a New Model?

Happily I sang out, “ East bound and down, loaded up and truckin’, we gonna do what they say can’t be done. We got a long way to go and a short time to get there. I’m east bound, just watch ol’ Bandit run.”

Darling girl looked at me like I was a fool.

“Sing along,” I said, smiling, “you know the words!”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” she answered. She then shuffled off and finished putting the groceries away.

My wife doesn’t know “East Bound and Down?” My wife doesn’t feel happy, warm thoughts when Smokey and the Bandit speeds, screaming chicken proudly displayed, through the nostalgic corner of her mind? Who the hell did I marry? I might have to trade in for a better model.

None of which changes the fact that Dede Scozzafava is doing what she can to provide help and safe harbor to a liberal Democrat in an important election for Republicans. The good sense of everyone who bucked the GOP party line and supported Hoffman, the independent (and conservative) challenger. I realize that lots of folks are upset with Newt Gingrich for pronouncing support for Scozzafava in this race, but he is utterly right about one part of this: this is a fight that should have taken place in a primary and not after the establishment simply pronounced Scozzafava as the candidate of choice. The person who wrote what I’ve quoted below should never have been the Republican candidate for the district.

I want to thank you for your support and friendship. Over the past 24 hours, I have had encouraging words sent to my family and me. Many of you have asked me whom you should support on Tuesday.

Since announcing the suspension of my campaign, I have thought long and hard about what is best for the people of this District, and how to answer your questions. This is not a decision that I have made lightly.

You know me, and throughout my career, I have been always been an independent voice for the people I represent. I have stood for our honest principles, and a truthful discussion of the issues, even when it cost me personally and politically. Since beginning my campaign, I have told you that this election is not about me; it’s about the people of this District.

It is in this spirit that I am writing to let you know I am supporting Bill Owens for Congress and urge you to do the same.

At the end of the day, Scozzafava has shown that she has truly earned the title of Republican in Name Only and that voters were right to be suspicious of her. If she truly cared, as she has stated, about smaller government and government restraint then she would never have endorsed Bill Owens, the Democrat in the race. If she made the choice as a matter of conscience, then she is no true Republican; if she made it as a matter of pique, then she’s more concerned about her own hurt feelings than she is about her supposed values. Either way, a horrible showing on her part and a loud message to the Republican party as we continue to head toward the bigger fights in 2010.

Whodathunk that putting Burt Reynolds, Sally Field, and Jerry Reed together in a movie would work?

I think further cultural testing might be necessary. If she’s heard of C.W. McCall, that’s mitigating. Try I sez callin’ all trucks, this here’s The Duck, and we’re about to go a huntin’ bear. If the best she can do for a truck drivin’ tune is Shaky Town (Jackson Browne) then I don’t know what to say.

As far as Diablo Dede is concerned, if the GOPNY has any balls, she’ll be ostracized. No political future for her.

Tangentally, speaking of addressing things in the primaries, that’s the only way I can think of to vote all the bums out, because when it comes to the main election, I doubt many will hold their nose and vote for the other party, in order to vote all incumbents out.

Was kinda wondering what was going on in your neck of the woods. If educating DG in the finer points of cinema is what’s keeping from the blog, then you’re excused. Otherwise, we’ll expect a note from Epstein’s mother.

Otherwise, we’ll expect a note from Epstein’s mother.

Nice.

We were on vacation last week and now I jump into the job hunt fully. I was cleaning up my last projects for my former employer until week before last--this will be my first week of truly unemployed unemployment (and marks the beginning of my severance pay). Which has kept me a little bit preoccupied, if you know what I mean.

Thank God Doug has been here to keep the site alive.

I find myself hoping that most of the bums being thrown out this time around happen to be Democrats and that their replacement parts this time around happen to be true conservatives. I try to steer away from the “RINO” tag since I’ve been accused of that myself, but Dede--well, damn, she’s definitely showed her true colors. The GOP establishment in NY should be embarrassed for having put so much into supporting a candidate who turned like a rabid dog on conservative principles as soon as her own candidacy was obviously losing. She could have earned a lot of good will by doing the right thing for the right reason (quitting the race to support party unity behind a good conservative candidate).

Hopefully Republican party elite are taking note: wasting time, credibility, and money on candidates like Dede is not only a losing proposition, but opens the party to brutal attacks from supposed Republicans (again, like Dede). Learn the lesson, Mr. Steele.

You could play “Wolf Creek Pass” while driving her over Wolf Creek Pass ...

on Nov 01 2009 @ 08:16 PM

Yeah, I just tried playing that. She’s ignoring me now.

Should’ve taken your advice. Should’ve saved it until we were driving over Wolf Crick Pass.

Scary words, ZB. Scary. Though last we spoke on that topic, didn’t sound too bad in your case.

I haven’t been over Wolf Creek in a long while—don’t often have a reason to head that direction. S’pose I oughta just invent one sometime. Maybe McCall is a bit much? How about 6 Days on the Road, done by Taj Majal?

And I think that one requirement to being a high-up party apparatchik, in the GOP or Democrat Party, is that you’re immune to embarrassment.

The only Taj Mahal she’s likely to know is his version of “Take This Hammer,” and that’s just because I put it on so many of our playlists when we travel.

The job hunt is a very scary thing. I had hoped that with the extra time in the office--and a very lax, understanding boss who was willing to let me do some of my job hunting from the office--I would be able to find myself a soft landing. Didn’t work out that way.

As for that last bit, we really do need new leadership. I’d volunteer myself for the job (of course I would) if I were even remotely qualified.

I don’t think you need a model upgrade, or even a firmware upgrade.  Software should do it.

Get the “Smokey and the Bandit” installation DVD from the box where you stashed all the quick-start cards and driver disks.  Put it in the DVD player, press play.

Installation is easier if you close all other programs first, and ensure you have 2-3 tasty adult beverages of her choice already installed first.

Good luck.

Well, if it’s any consolation, I just finished my last week on official unemployment.  I started a new job this morning.  I found the job cold on Indeed.com, so even if you don’t have that whole network thing going, there’s hope.

And now’s the time to be planning for caucus season in a few months. I plan to do what I can, but here in deepest Adams county, my impact will be limited.

Double feature in her future--Smokey and the Bandit followed by Convoy. Don’t forget my invite. Both of those movies are on my list of early HBO movies watched over 100 times. Where the hell were my parents?

A great style and a very rare point of view on the topic of speech!
Loved that post a lot!=)

Movie night at Zomby’s house? Can we do White Line Fever? With Jan-Michael Vincent, Kay Lenz, and Slim Pickens, it’s gotta be good! (Yes, I’ve seen it, and no, I don’t remember much about it.) Top the evening off with Stephen King’s Maximum Overdrive.

I’ll bring popcorn.

on Nov 04 2009 @ 04:43 PM

I’m pretty sure if I take y’all’s advice (Don and Jed, that is), Darling Girl might waive our “No Takebacks” clause and send me packing.

I think I’ll have to re-watch White Line Fever (which, I’ve seen every Jan-Michael Vincent movie, but damned if I can remember that one) some night when she’s asleep. For my marriage’s sake.
