Cool Tools: gDisk

Here’s another great moment for Open Source: take Gmail, add an easy application that allows you to up and download files to your account, and you suddenly have over two gigs of online storage. For Mac OS X users, that’s exactly what gDisk does in a reliable, small, free application that I’ve been using for some time to share files between my computers.

And it really is easy. Open the application, log in to your gMail account, create categories for the files that you will transfer, and drag-and-drop files to your little heart’s content. The categories that I’ve created are things like Invoices, Work Files, and 9/11 Tribute. Wherever I am and whatever computer I’m using, as long as I have an Internet connection, I have access to important files.

Very freakin’ cool.

Check it out.

PS- Still need an invitation to sign up for your own Gmail account? Leave a comment and be sure to use a real email address. I’ll send invitations until I run out.

Dude, it looks like I will be buying either an iBook or a PowerBook before the end of the year. I will have tell you all about it - in two weeks. Two. Over drinks. Many drinks. Which really is the whole point this comment…

If you run out of invites, let me know - I’ve got a bunch.

Jerry, I’m looking forward to the booze and companionship as much as I am the event. I need a break…

Wheels, I’m betting that won’t be too much of a problem. I still have 99 of the things and they aren’t quite the commodity that they once were. If I do run out, though, I’ll let you know.

Thanks.

If you run out, I have gajillions to give away.

Hello,

This is a great blog.  I’m going to be sure to link yours to mine.  Would you mind doing the same for me?

Thank you very much.

Is it even possible to run out of Gmail invites? I mean, face it. The damn things replenish once you hit zero, I think. More population controls are needed to keep them from spiriling out of control.

Perhaps an unlimited-bag hunting season? For the remainder of known time?

Speaking of email… hinthinthint

Nice application. I wonder if there’s one for the Godawful PC side of things, but I don’t wonder enough to look. I make do with just mailing stuff to myself via Gmail. wink (A REAL man doesn’t need an interface!)

You know, that’s exactly how I did it before I found gDisk.

You can sign up for a Gmail account without an invite by using your cell phone.

Be careful with gDisk or anything like it. Using it is against Gmail’s Terms of Service and your account can be suspended or deleted.

Heck, that can happen at any time. I too used Gmail to transfer a lot of files from 1 pc to another just by using email attachments. After I did a lot of downloads in a short period of time, they suspended the account for 24 hours for too much activity.

Good advice. I’ll be careful with it--I hadn’t heard that the Google staff was particularly vigilant about Gmail accounts.

Thanks.

I like your blog.  I came here from Jeff Goldstein’s Hot Air Video.  It looked like the blogger bash was lots of fun.

Could I have an invite for google mail?

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff, thanks for the kind words and apologies for that video. It will live forever in my nightmares.

The blogger bash is always fun. If you ever find yourself in the area when its going on, I highly suggest dropping by. First drink is on me.

I’ll be sending that gMail invite in just a few moments.
