Clash of the Titans: Yeah, That’s Good Stuff
![]() |
You could make the case that it was well past its prime even when it was released; movie effects had passed by Harryhausen’s jerky models by the time Titans came to the theaters. You could say that his earlier movies, Jason and the Argonauts and Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger, were better examples of the craft. You could even say that it bastardizes Greek mythology to the point where it has no resemblance to the real thing.
You might even be right, but I say that it’s a person who can’t remember their childish (in a good way) love of the fantastic--their utter willingness to surrender themselves to the fiction--who can’t find themselves enjoying this little slice of movie magic.
I couldn’t tell you whether there is anything truly good about Clash of the Titans, but Netflix delivered it to me today and the smile on my face is about as genuine as you could imagine.
Ah, pure happiness.

Yeah, baby! Now we’re talkin’! Clash is right up there with Flash Gordon ("Flash… Ah-Ahh!") when it comes to good, clean, campy fun.
I love this movie because it takes me back to those innocent 5th and 6th grade years just like you. Isn’t this the movie that had the medusa? Still, my all time favorite movie from that era is Excalibur. Do you have that one in the que? Also, you know how much I love Time Bandits from that same period as well. As you know, I skipped the whole Princess Bride thing, but now with Clash of the Titans, you’re finally talking some good schmaltzy fun. Ooh, how about the Dark Cyrstal? Remember that classic?
Flash, Time Bandits, and Dark Crystal are all going on the list (assuming they have all of the above). Flash Gordon may be at the very top of the list for campy, fun movies.
Kids today (heheh--I kind of enjoy saying that) just don’t know what they’re missing.
Stop-motion looks more realistic to me than most of the crap I see today. These FX people have gotten computers and gotten lazy.
Ray Harryhausen’s best work was in Jason and the Argonauts but the Medusa part of Clash… was excellent. ‘Camp’ is apparently a synomym for ‘crap’.
I love the movie on its own merits, but I reeeeeally love the music. I caught ‘Clash’ on TV in Spanish, and I was humming the theme for days.
