AFC West Stuff

In case you hadn’t noticed, Nathan does a pretty good job of rounding up the AFC West standings every week, and this week he’s done even better than usual. There’s always a little “homer” in his stuff, but this week is more balanced than you would expect from a die-hard Chiefs fan.

The trackback URL for this entry is:

I’m glad my effort to balance my coverage has improved.  Balance was an issue I didn’t even notice at first, didn’t care about later, but has become increasingly important to me the more I write.
But it is mainly written for Chiefs’ fans by a Chiefs’ fan, so some “homerism” is unavoidable. As long as it doesn’t get ridiculous levels (where I was last year and earlier this year), “homerism” is probably more enjoyable for all readers (gives Bronco, Raider, and Charger fans something to react to).

I would never have said that it was bad--just that it was written from a really obvious bias. I mean, I still read it every week, though, so the homer slant didn’t keep me away.

This week, though, it just seemed like a really good, balanced view that could still have someone nodding in agreement even though they weren’t a Chiefs fan. Good stuff.

Well, the best way to keep me striving for balance is to compliment me on my progress in that direction rather than criticism for the distance still yet to go! [grin]
Actually, reading it again, I think I don’t communicate my respect for the Broncos enough.  They are a very good team, and still the best in AFC West until proven otherwise by W/L record, and there’s still a lot of football to go in the season.  They will represent the AFC West well as either Division Champ or Wildcard.
I’m a little harsh on Plummer, and harsher than I intended on Champ.  Then again, Denver lost to KC, so there will be reasons for that loss to point out.  I’ll try to make my respect for the Chargers and Broncos (particularly Bailey, Plummer, and the LBs) more clear next week.

Why are the Colts in the AFC South. By south do they mean south of Michigan?

It’s one of the lesser-known results of non-Euclidian geography.  I’d answer more completely, but I don’t want to step on Mr. Answer’s toes.

Mr. Answer might be happy handing this one off.

Just sayin’.

The NFL divisions actually do make quite a bit of sense. Look at the NHL. Dallas is in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference. You have to cross at least three state lines or Mexico to get to the Pacific from Dallas.

At least Indianapolis is south of somewhere.

I was going to dash off an answer, but since I’m newly aware of my intellectual cowardice (wanting the respect of being knowledgeable without putting in the effort to ensure I am so), I’m going to have do some research and put together a decent article.

It would be a good article for the site where I contribute, so I’ll let you know when it’s done so you can link it.  Or maybe I’ll just put a copy here in the comments.  Who knows?  I’m a daring, impulsive sort of intellectual coward.

O/T, but I couldn’t find Nathan’s email address. The Date.Valid.End tag on your old blog has a space between < and meta, which makes it visible in the browser.

Also, what’s this talk of “intellectual cowardice?” I’ve never even seen that phrase before.

on Dec 10 2005 @ 12:44 PM

"Intelligectual cowardice” was in a piece about Maureen O’Dowd on NRO.  Someone described her book as (paraphrase) not having made a serious effort to research actual facts and actually be credible, but still wanting to be treated as credible/intelligent insightful anyway.
And that’s what I want from my writing, too, so I figure I must be an intellectual coward like her.  So I remind myself of that in order to actually be a little more intellectually courageous.  So rather than tossing out an answer that would satisfy the question but not be completely accurate, I’d rather spend a little time researching and writing an actual article.  I’ll probably have it done by tomorrow morning.

You’ll have to remove the spaces, take away the all-caps, add the correct symbol and a dotcom after the domain, but you should be able to figure it out.  Gotta try and stop those spambots.
