Must Read of the Day II

Thus, the Internet generation is inherently cowardly.

And if you disagree with what he says, tell him so here. As for me, well I tend to agree, although I had always stopped at "rude" instead of "cowardly." Suffice it to say, though, that it's highly unlikely that the person who recently accused me of being racist would have made the same accusation to my face.

Ummmm, no. He would never have said that to your face.

R thinks the internet to be a breeding ground of cowards, and those of little scruples.

Now that I have commented, I will read the link.

I was half-surprised that on my new cell phone, there was NOT a list of phrases (for easy text messaging) along the lines of "I think we should talk" or "Welcome to dumpsville, population, YOU."

And I agree with you; I think it's more rudeness than cowardice but either way, it's still pretty shitty.

I've always liked John Gabriel's Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory. Short and to the point. And it also reminds me of this video. I'm a dork.

That's pretty funny coming from an anonymous poster named "dorkafork."

But to your point, zomby: is it cowardice for someone to assert something knowing that there is no fear of physical confrontation?

Would the person making the same assertion "to your face" be somehow more truthful? Or just more "brave"?

Is the social control that keeps people from saying all the little petty, snippy things that they think really helping? And if people think these things on the Internet, don't they think them in real life? I know people who have thought horrible things about me but I never knew it until years later, because they just sniped behind my back. It seems in some ways it's better to get it out in the open.

I dunno. Just some thoughts...

Actually, I'd say that saying some kinds of things to people -- whether in person or not, whether truthful or not -- is just plain stupid.

The biggest danger in doing so is that the target won't care, and onlookers will see the person saying the whatever, as a jerk (or choose your preferred epithet).

Courage? Courage in being stupid isn't all it's cracked up to be.
