I. Just. Don't. Know. (Jerry)

I'm not sure how I feel about this or what to say about it. Via Slashdot, Bloody-Disgusting.com is reporting that Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Bruce Campbell are remaking Evil Dead.

Mixed emotions abound...

[If you don't know why I'm conflicted then this post probably isn't for you.]

This is insanity. I would rather an entire new film than a regression.

I'm with Shawn on this one. As much as I love all of the above, remaking Evil Dead just shouldn't happen--it's perfect the way it is. No conflict here, just a plea to not let it happen.

How are they gonna bilk the Hollywood moneymen out of several billion to make a totally unnecessary movie if they just let the original version stand?

The risk of making a totally new movie is that it might make enough of a profit for the backers to get a cut.

Sorry, I godda sduvvy dose. That should say "several Million."

Then again, if they really pad the payroll and the special effects...

I'm with you guys. They already remade The Evil Dead once: Evil Dead II. If they're going to do another Evil Dead, they should do a sequel to Army of Darkness, not a remake. And Raimi isn't the director? Yikes.

Apparently Raimi is not going to direct and Bruce Campbell is not going to star. They're both going to produce, instead. What the hell is going on here? Usually these horror remakes don't bother me because characters are usually secondary to the story. Not so here. These changes will take the characters and screw them up in our minds!

I seriously hope this is just another net rumor. Otherwise this is a world I don't want to live in.

I'm leaning the same direction that you guys are. If Sam and Bruce were not involved al all then I would be completely outraged. I'm disappointed that they are just going to produce, but their involvement is the only thing that gives me any hope at all. As much as I love both Evil Dead and Evil Dead II, they were both extremely cheap. If they can keep the essence of the origianl, get a higher production value, and not go completely overboard, then matbe it will be OK. It will never supplant the original, but there may be some merit in it.

Of course, I'd be much happier if they just did another installment with Sam directing and Bruce starring.

George Lucas has already screwed up one brilliant franchise. Let's hope that Sam and Bruse don't do the same.

All I know is that if they go and make Greedo fire first, Sam, Bruce, and I are gonna tangle somethin' fierce.

Seriously though, this is akin to Peter Jackson remaking "Bad Taste" with the budget of LOTR. It would be dazzling and ooh-ahh-able, but the heart of it would be torn out and buried under the planks of Hollywood hyperbole. And Peter would sit there in a screening, hearing that heart beat from all around him, until he finally admitted to us all that, yes, he did kill his movie!

And then he'd laugh all the way to the bank anyway.
