resurrectionsongNovember 04, 2004Is Arafat Dead? (Updated)Aside from any personal feelings toward the event, I can't decide what I think this means. On the one hand, it could clear the way to new leadership that will be more straightforward and willing to work with the Israelis and the United States on an agreement that will make the Middle East a better place. On the other hand, it leaves the potential for a surge of mourning and sympathy that will lead to someone that holds the same convictions and ideals that Arafat held. In that case, the situation would be unchanged (or even worse, if that person proves to have a deft hand at manipulating events and organizations). Here's hoping, though, that his death symbolizes the passing of the old guard and the rise of a new, more hopeful Palestinian leadership. (To clarify, for anyone who might otherwise feel misled by this post's title and its first line, the article I reference says that Arafat is brain dead. This started the line of thought that ended with me wondering what the effect will be on the perpetual "peace process.") Update: More news on the subject. Or you could read Jeff G's take on Arafat's health. Cleverly combined with talk of Colin Powell and John Ashcroft. Posted by zombyboy at November 4, 2004 09:48 AMComments
While I would never be “happy” about a fellow human being’s death, I can’t say that I’m going to be all that sad if he is dead. Posted by: Patrick at November 4, 2004 10:38 AMI'd keep my promise of how to react to newsw of Arafat's death, but while I can dance (more or less), I've already eaten the candy I was going to hand out. Dang slowpoke. Posted by: McGehee at November 4, 2004 10:43 AMWait a minute. He's "brain-dead"? Why is this suddenly news? Posted by: McGehee at November 4, 2004 10:44 AM |
