Political Stuff
Item 1: Worst President and Worst Former President Watch
Read this site regularly, and you'll know that I hold little but contempt for former President Jimmy Carter. He's a foolish, petty little man who trades on the uncritical love showered on him by people who don't bother to remember his record in the Oval Office. This would be irritating but fine if he would just keep his nose out of current political issues.
Alas, Jimmy can't keep his mouth shut. From a Hardball transcript:
CARTER: Well, one parallel is that the Revolutionary War, more than any other war up until recently, has been the most bloody war we’ve fought. I think another parallel is that in some ways the Revolutionary War could have been avoided. It was an unnecessary war.
Had the British Parliament been a little more sensitive to the colonial’s really legitimate complaints and requests the war could have been avoided completely, and of course now we would have been a free country now as is Canada and India and Australia, having gotten our independence in a nonviolent way.
Yes, that's right: Carter would have had the US sit out its own war of liberation.
Read the commentary here. If this wasn't someone that people took so seriously, it would be hilarious. Unfortunately, some people continue to think that he is a great man and a great politician.
Item 2: Ashley's Story
Some Republicans don't like the new Ashley's Story ad--an ad that you'll probably see in your neck of the woods sometime soon or, if you can't wait, can see by clicking on that link. Yes, it centers on a hug, yes, it appeals to the warm and fuzzy feeling we all want to have about the man we'll cast our vote for. I like the ad and I like liking the guy who has already earned my vote.
Whenever I cast John Kerry in the same role at the same moment, the results wouldn't be the same. Is it meaningful? Maybe not. Does it feel meaningful? Absolutely.
Item 3: In Reference to Cuba
Quite simply one of the best thing that Val has written.
I, too, believe that the Cuban people must be free to decide their own internal affairs. Unfortunately, the Cuban government is not of the same opinion. In Cuba, it's not "the people" who make the important decisions, it's Fidel Castro and his regime who make every single decision for them. You really want the Cuban people to make their own decisions? Then call for their government to allow them to. Propose free elections. Let the people come out and say what they want and what they feel without fear of reprisals. Without fear for their very lives.
Take the time and read it. It's worth your time.
