resurrectionsongOctober 08, 2004Presidential Debates: Town Hall VIKerry's closing statement was a list of talking points that washed right past me. Nothing memorable, nothing that touched me at all. Weak. Bush, on the other hand, is giving us something a little better. He addresses a live audience well at times; his public speaking record is remarkably mixed. He's better often, though, at making a personal connection with his audience. Decent, if not brilliant response. A much better debate for Bush, less so for Kerry, but I would still call it close to a draw. A grand improvement for Bush, but not necessarily a thing that will change too many minds. I wonder what the polls will do? And that's it, folks. I'm out for the night and won't be back until either Sunday or Monday. Thanks, all. Posted by zombyboy at October 8, 2004 08:40 PMComments
My Mom has been a classic undecided. She is older, a single mother, and Catholic. Demographically she should be more Kerry than Bush. She also disagreed with Bush on Iraq. She is also very thoughtful so she approached the debates with a very open mind, hoping that they would help her make up her mind (she isn't a news junkie). She came away from the first debate feeling better about Bush. She felt that Kerry was very fake and that Bush's much-derided emotion showed conviction. She came away from the second debate as a Bush supporter. She feels that Bush won decisively. She was very unimpresses with Kerry's positions on abortion and fetal stem-cell research. Specifically, she questions how he can take these positions and still call himself a faithful Catholic. Her favorite point from Bush was his assertion that we sometimes have to make tought choices in order to stand behind our beliefs and convictions. She now believes that Bush is a man of strong moral character who will stand up for what he believes in and honestly try to do what he thinks is right whereas Kerry is simply an ambitious man who will say whatever he must in order to become President. Bottom line: she trusts Bush and not Kerry. Obviously this is just one story, but if it is an indicator then Kerry may be in trouble. And for the record, my mother knows that I am a Bush supporter but I have not done anything to try and sway her opinion. She told me that she wanted to see the debates first and I have respected this. The only reason that we spoke this weekend is because she initiated the conversation. She wanted me to know that she now understands why I support Bush. Posted by: Jerry at October 11, 2004 06:54 AMSee, if we were in church right now, I'd have to let out a hearty "amen."
