The VP Debate Last Word

The g-phrase, a registered independent, liked Cheney better last night and she isn't the political nut that I am. She liked his seriousness and his grown-up answers--and she really didn't like Edwards.

And Patty hit on something that, along with an African-American vote that will probably give Bush a boost (while still being solidly Democrat at the base (and have I told you how much I think that voter block will change to represent a wider spectrum of political thoughts as more African-Americans enter the middle and upper classes?)), might give us a second term with the President:

Dick Cheney has the security mom vote. He's steady and solid and serious, and he knows stuff, especially how the world works, and I want that kind of guy in charge when the world has too many people in it who like to blow up kids.

It's a different world, and slick and pretty just don't count right now.

Personally, I think she nails it both for the security moms and for people like me.

Your G-phrase does nail it and I've witnessed the same trend in my own home. My "W" is definitely an independent-minded Security Mom with little interest in politics outside of school issues and taxes. She took a strong disliking to Edwards while watching the DNC convention and was quick to turn her attention away from last night's debate after commenting how much more she liked Cheney for the same reasons stated above--we just don't have the time to buy into the Edwards charm and Kerry global prostate exam. The s&%t is happening now and the thought of Bush-Cheney II is much more comforting than ramping up another administration. Who wants to send new recruits like Kerry-Edwards to the front lines of of an already raging war on terrorism?

I have my own issues that would normally be important in an election, trouble is, there's a war on. It's not like wars in the past, fought between armies, it's a war where the other side thinks my young grandchildren are valid targets.
In this election there is one side, the Republicans, that are fighting, one side, the Democrats that aren't. I may have some disagreements with HOW we are fighting but the Donks, with the exception of a few like Liebermann and Miller, show no interest in fighting this war at all.
Fighting this warthe way we are fighting might result in our losing. Not fighting it at all will guarentee our losing.
