Firstly...

I will be commenting on the debates in real time--at least if there is anything particularly interesting about them.

I honestly expect a good showing by Kerry tonight, though. Not in the over-inflated, gosh he's a great debater, so let's not get our hopes up too high kind of way. But he's won elections before, he's faced pressure before, and he knows how to win. He knows that tonight's debate is an important opportunity to make his case, and I don't think he'll miss that opportunity.

There are only two questions that I have going into this:

1. What kind of a performance can we expect from President Bush?
   
2. Will either of them step beyond the advertisement rhetoric and really address the issues? While I understand that there is only marginal room for depth in the format, there is still a need to go beyond the script if they are going to impress people.
   

Yep, my expectations--not of the President, but of the proceedings--are pretty low.
