A Horrible Thing

On the way home today, I saw a horrible thing--not an accident, but the aftermath of an accident. On the opposite side of the highway, I saw an SUV that had flipped on its side, smashing against the guard rail with tremendous force. The side of the vehicle was completely caved in, the highway was closed down, and police cars were everywhere.

In my head, I knew that someone had died. It's rare to see that kind of destruction without a death involved. Even more sad was when I found out that it was a three year old child.

A sport utility vehicle carrying a family of five struck a tow truck on Interstate 70 Tuesday afternoon, killing a 3-year-old child and injuring four others.

The Chevrolet Suburban had clipped a flatbed tow truck on its left rear corner and flipped several times before it landed upside down on the guardrail, Denver police said.

The crash occurred just before 4 p.m. on the shoulder of the westbound lanes of I-70, just before Sheridan Boulevard. Traffic was shut down at I-70 between Washington and Sheridan to allow emergency workers to remove the injured and detectives to piece together the cause of the crash.

Witnesses, shaken up by what they saw, told 7NEWS that the SUV was weaving in and out of lanes at high speeds just before the crash. The toddler was ejected from the vehicle and died immediately.

What a useless, stupid way for a child to die.

The story.

Indeed. On Saturday, Mrs. X and I drove up to Culver City to visit a friend, then to Pasadena to visit my parents, then back to "the" O.C. Round trip, approximately 150 miles, passing three (apparently) serious accidents.

sorry you had to see something like that. More sorry for the surviving family but I am sure it is unsettling for you.

Make no mistake: I'm much more worried about the surviving family than I am my own delicate sensibilities. I'm also far more pissed at the driver who caused the accident.

Drivers don't cause accidents; SUVs cause accidents. /sarcasm
