Football Season is Almost Here

Normally, I get pretty excited about the arrival of football season. This year, as a sports fan in Denver, it's actually more depressing than anything else.

It's looking like a disappointing hockey season that grew into a bad baseball season is going to head straight into a sub-par football season for us Broncos fans. With all the changing faces, the huge questions that still hang over the receiving corps, and the loss of some of the team's best talent, the Broncos could be headed for one of those dreaded "rebuilding seasons."

As Nathan points out, the outlook is decidedly rosier for the Chiefs.

Hopefully the Raiders will be horrible. That would take some of the sting away.

Well, hold on there. I would say "slightly" rosier, not "decidedly".
The Chiefs have questions, too. And the pieces are in place for the Broncos to do quite well. No one would have predicted last year at this time that the Broncos were one foot injury away from a possible 14-2 record (which they quite easily could have been), or that they would still make the playoffs despite going 1-3 in games Plummer missed. It is possible to hit on all the major FA acquisitions, and Shanahan is good enough to get everyone going in the same direction with a full ahead of steam. Will he? Ay, there's the rub, but I'd say better than 50/50 he will. And yet, I think they will split games with the Chiefs (home and home) and get barely edged. It will be a successful season, I'm sure.

See, that's why I've never understood why anybody can be a "fan" of a sports team. The players change affiliations so often these days that you're not so much rooting for a tradition or an institution or "team" of some sort but just a corny name under which players will fulfill contractual obligations in order to become filthy rich. I can understand being a fan of a high school team, even a college team, but a professional team? Making a "profession" out of a "sport" defeats the point in my opinion.

Don't get me started.I've got the Texas Rangers and the Dallas Cowboys. Ah well, there's always Nascar.

Well, then take a look at the Chiefs. The only new players this year are drafted. No free agent signings. And only 3 last year. They grow 'em from within. Better to sign your own, the Chiefs think, because you know what you are dealing with.

Dude, I have Jay Fiedler as my QB and Dave Wannstedt as my head coach. It just doenst get any worse than that, unless, of course, I lived in Cleveland or Cincinatti.

sub-par? You got to be kidding. The defense will be awesome...and...well....um...the defense will be awesome!!!! They will definitely help out the awf-ence.

I predict a breakout year for Jeb Putzier.
