I Blame Opinion Engine...

I'm going to be walking around all day with the theme song to Convoy playing in my head.

Jerk.

Okay, here's the game. Sometime in an upcoming weekend, I'm going to be having a bad 70's/80's movie night. Right now, some of the candidates for bad movies from that era that I still want to see are:

  1. Caveman
  2. Blazing Saddles
  3. Little Darlings
  4. Bad News Bears
  5. Convoy
  6. Every Which Way But Loose
  7. Strange Brew (Suggested by Nathan)
  8. Cannonball Run (Suggested by StumpJumper)
  9. The Muppet Movie (Suggested by Remy)
  10. Young Frankenstein (Remy) (Maybe Mel Brooks' best movie)
  11. Spaceballs (Remy)

Any other suggestions?

Beastmaster
All of Me
Strange Brew

Strange Brew-- good call.

Posted by: zombyboy at June 1, 2004 11:13 AM

Oh, God -- Comvoy. Why did somebody have to go and ruin a good song by making a bad movie out of it?

Posted by: McGehee at June 1, 2004 11:33 AM

Come to think of it, they did that a lot in the '70s, didn't they...?

Posted by: McGehee at June 1, 2004 11:34 AM

Heheh. Yeah. Isn't that great?

Posted by: zombyboy at June 1, 2004 11:39 AM

2 things.

Blazing Saddles was not a bad movie. C'mon Z'boy, lower your standards a little, eh? For a Mel Brooks film, History of the World, Part I was much worse.

A good place to troll for the worst would be Rotten Tomatoes. Hmmm. Looking at it now -- it appears it's morphed some. Maybe there's a "worst of the worst" section in there someplace.

Posted by: jed at June 1, 2004 11:56 AM

For the record, I absolutely loved History...

Maybe I shouldn't use the term "bad"--but, on the other hand, I can't exactly say that they're the height of movie art, either.

I'm stumped.

And where does Airplane fit in?

Posted by: zombyboy at June 1, 2004 11:58 AM

I don't have any suggestions, only dumbfounded confusion.

Strange Brew and Blazing Saddles in a list of bad movies?? I don't know what to say. I'm stupefied. Strange Brew is like Canadian Shakespeare. Afterall, it's based off of Macbeth (albeit very, very loosely). What about Bachelor Party? That was a bad one!

Posted by: Corey at June 1, 2004 12:17 PM

I'm with Jed and Corey on this one. You cannot call Blazing Saddles and Strange Brew "bad" movies without moving the beer tally in my favor. Period.

Posted by: StumpJumper at June 1, 2004 12:27 PM

However, Cannonball Run and Smokey and the Bandit are fair game. But don't even think about speaking poorly of Terry Bradshaw...

Posted by: StumpJumper at June 1, 2004 12:29 PM

Spaceballs,
Young Frankenstein
The Muppet Movie

All of these are great movies and deserve to be on any "bad" movie list. (Of course you did mean "bad" = really cool, awesome, right?

OTH, there's always Valley Girls.

Posted by: Remy at June 1, 2004 01:38 PM

Corey, Bachelor Party sucked. I actually like a lot of movies that I would call "bad", but that one is just really, really bad.

"Canadian Shakespeare." That's perfect.

Remy, Valley Girls is in that same category. The other three you suggest, though are definitely in the right direction.

Logan's Run?

Posted by: zombyboy at June 1, 2004 01:50 PM

Logan's Run is classic SF. I actually consider it to be very good. On the other hand, there's always Forbidden Planet. This is another classic SF movie that is also very good, except that I can't take it seriously since it stars Leslie Nielsen. If you are talkin' about Airplane and Naked Gun then you must throw in Forbidden Planet for completeness. All that much easier since I own the DVD!

Oops. Forgot to close the italics tag...

Posted by: StumpJumper at June 1, 2004 02:20 PM

Fixed.

Forbidden Planet is a good call. And that first Naked Gun was one of the funniest damned movies ever.

Posted by: zombyboy at June 1, 2004 02:24 PM

There seems to be some difference of opinion of what a "bad" movie is...
None of the movies on the list are actually "bad" as in "unwatchable", and why would you want to watch them if they were?
No, I assumed that "bad" meant "lacking the typical qualities of a good movie", and I think the suggestions ZB accepted bear that out.. Personally, when we do something like this, we call it "Quirky Movie Night", but that's just me.

Another suggestion: The Man With Two Brains.

Posted by: nathan at June 1, 2004 02:42 PM

Precisely. It shall, from now on, be known as "Quirky Movie Night."

Posted by: zombyboy at June 1, 2004 02:56 PM

"To be or not to be" by Mel Brooks
I think it might have been the first movie that he acted in.

Posted by: matt at June 1, 2004 08:17 PM

I hope it's not too late to get this suggestion in:

Ski School. Hell, how could a movie with Booger from that Kirk Cameron sitcom not be good? Don't answer that.

One trick for those who like alcohol-you need to play a little game when you are watching it. There is a character that has no lines, but gets a ton of screen time. He wears a neon pink hat. Everytime he flashes up on the screen, take a drink. It gets ugly (and makes it a watchable movie)

Posted by: Corey at June 2, 2004 09:20 AM

If you can find it, and don't mind adding a horror flick to the list, rent "The Sentinel."

Trust me.

Posted by: Stephen Green at June 2, 2004 10:51 AM

"Labrynthe"
with David Bowie

Posted by: matt at June 2, 2004 02:00 PM

Blazing Saddles was the most annoying movie to watch. I fell asleep everytime R rented it. Anything that stars Leslie Nielson or Jennifer Aniston (I know, she didn't hit the scene until the '90s) is going to be just ridiculous. I suggest Blue Suede Shoe. It will make people (women I should say) rethink Brad Pitt as a consistently good actor (notice, the word "consistent" as Fight Club and 12 Monkeys were extremely well done, imho).

Posted by: Rae at June 2, 2004 06:23 PM

Matt--good call. That's a great movie.

Rae, you just reminded me of another movie I want to see, but I can't remember what it was called. It has Val Kilmer as a secret agent. Maybe it was called "Top Secret."

Speaking poorly of Blazing Saddles is grounds for mockery in this group, you know?

Posted by: zombyboy at June 2, 2004 06:39 PM

Yes, well, I haven't met many women who are just thrilled to see that movie. Although, I do like Gene Wilder, just not that particular film.

Posted by: Rae at June 2, 2004 08:42 PM

Rae doesn't like Blazing Saddles? Next she'll claim the Three Stooges aren't funny!

Posted by: McGehee at June 3, 2004 05:43 AM

"The Last Dragon". Oh...my...god. Very bad, and very '80s. Makes "The Transformers Movie" look like "The Breakfast Club", or something.

"The Warriors": CAN YOU DIG IT?!!

"One Crazy Summer" fits the bad '80s movie night fairly well. Jon Cusack, Demi Moore, and Bobcat Goldthwait. Speaking of which, do you dare watch a "Police Academy" movie?

Then there's the sci-fi: "Buckaroo Banzai", "Repo Man"

Umm... "Red Dawn", "Gleaming the Cube", "Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo"?

Or if you want another "good" bad movie a la Blazing Saddles: "Hollywood Shuffle".

Posted by: dorkafork at June 4, 2004 10:03 PM

And that is "Top Secret" with Val Kilmer. Very funny movie.
