What Cinco De Mayo Means to Me

Cinco De Mayo has some very specific meanings for me now that I live right off of Federal here in Denver. See, this is really the epicenter of the celebration here in Denver, being a strong Hispanic community.

What, then, does it mean to me?

  1. Cars slowly cruising the neighborhood for three nights. The cars keep going until late in the evening, draped in Mexican flags, filled with happy faces. This I could handle.
  2. Thumping, loud music from the open windows of the cars. The neighborhood is already home to occasional thumpy music (all rhythm, no melody), but the frequency and regularity of said thumpy music seems to at least triple during the celebration. This wafts from the cruising cars until late in the evening. This is a problem.
  3. Honking. Almost constant, unceasing, and irritating honking that is far more prevalent than the thumpy music. Every time it seems that there is a respite from the horns, every time you think you might be drifting off to sleep, the horns start again. They pierce directly into the brain, jolting you from sleep, denying any opportunity that you might have for rest. This is a big problem.

With all due respect to those who love this holiday and their cultural heritage, this holiday sucks.

I think I need to move.

You only really taste the first one. The rest is gravy.
