Pride, Strength, and Determination (Update)
A friend of mine forwarded an email to me that was sent to her from the family of a Marine serving in Iraq. I share it with you not because it represents all of the soldiers in Iraq, but because it is a voice that I think is largely unheard in the more popular media. Names and much of the personal, introductory email have been removed to protect identities.
Marines are involved in firefights every day, and morale is fairly high. They question the CNN coverage of the war, though. It's almost as if they're reporting an entirely different situation. [He] wants us all to know how important it is for the people here to be given the opportunity for self-government. They are grateful for their freedom, but need continued support and protection from those who want us to fail.
[...]
The most important thing now is continued prayer and steadfast support for the Commander in Chief and his administration. [He] is so proud of the Commanders and Generals over there now. They are an inspiration to all the Marines in Iraq, and they all are doing a heroic job.
[...]
The following message is directly from [him] for me to attach to this one and send to you all. He has little time at a computer.
With love,
Thanks for all of your mail and messages. I don't have a chance to reply to everyone's email, but I am sending a letter back with every piece of mail I get. So, keep 'em coming!
We are doing some tuff fighting over here and need solid support from the America people, not distortion or desecration of the reasons for helping this part of the world. The greatest allies the terrorists have are the liberals in America and around the world. By undermining the good work we are doing over here, they are directly helping the people who are killing Marines and Soldiers. They are fighting against the very peace they proclaim to support and it needs to be stopped. Help us stay the course!!!
We are bringing much needed health and stability to the Iraqi people and we need to be able to continue.
Thanks again for all of your support and I hope to hear from each of you!
We have a chance to do something world-changing in Iraq, and, regardless of who you plan to vote for in the upcoming elections, we can all work for the greater good of rebuilding Iraq. Support the soldiers with more than empty words and realize that what they are doing is far more important than any partisan bickering over whom to blame in our government for the tragedy of September 11, 2001.
My thanks go both to the soldier for sharing these thoughts with us and for my Secret Correspondent for forwarding it to me and allowing me to share it with you.
Update: Once you've read this, read this to see precisely how some people are working against out soldiers and the rebuilding effort.
