resurrectionsongFebruary 17, 2004Civil Disobedience RevisitedMicha Gitner has a great look at civil disobedience on Catallarchy. If you enjoyed my take on it earlier (or, for that matter, even if you think I'm a bonehead), Gitner's post is well worth reading. Balanced and thought-provoking, it still leaves the concept of disobedience an intriguingly gray area for me. I've always believed that our system of government, with it's ability to change with the needs of the nation, was the foundation that would allow the country to flourish. I've come to believe that just as important as rule of law is intelligent dissent that challenges the system and forces citizens to confront the need for change. While I agree that it is a perfectly acceptable form of protest for private citizens to engage in civil disobedience, I find it appalling that elected officials like those in San Francisco will engage in such acts that defy the laws of the land. The same rules that forced Gov. George Wallace to stand down against the federal government during the integration battles should apply to the mayor and other elected officials in San Francisco.
