Mighty Little iPod

The new iPod Mini may be overpriced, but it also looks like it's going to be a success. Tiny, fashionable, and going on sale this Friday, the pre-order numbers are impressive.

Apple announced Tuesday that its iPod mini, first introduced to crowds at January's Macworld Expo in San Francisco, Calif., will be available in Apple retail stores and at Apple authorized resellers this Friday, February 20, 2004. What's more, the company also confirmed that more than 100,000 pre-orders have been made for the credit card-sized MP3 player.

That's 100,000 units at $249 a piece. Worldwide sales start in April.

While the Mini is only $50 cheaper than a bigger, more capable iPod, it's also only $50 more than a good 256 meg flash-memory based MP3 player. Looking from one direction, the 4 gig hard drive on the Mini looks tiny, looking from the other direction, it looks positively roomy.

In my world, it makes more sense to spend another fifty bucks and have the larger version. Steve Jobs and company seem to have found a sweet spot for a lot of people, though. What will be most interesting is to see how demand holds up after the first rush of orders is sold.

Read the story.
