My Own Personal Boycott

Dennis Miller has emerged as a voice of humorous, libertarian-conservatism following 9/11. George Carlin is well along his way to becoming the anti-Miller.

I stopped paying attention to Carlin years ago. Once upon a time, he was one of the funniest comedians on the planet. Sadly, he stopped being so funny when he started indulging himself in bitter and bilious anger. It wasn't so much his politics--which I'm happy to forgive in most performers--but simply that he stopped being funny.

The Michael Deeds interview of Carlin on AZCentral.com really shows the true nature of the old comedian. He seems to be made up of equal parts self-importance, far left leaning political beliefs, and arrogance.

No. First of all, I'm not liberal. I'm just about (being) anti-United States. I don't like the way this country operates. I think we've ruined this place. And I think it's largely because of businessmen. And businessmen are not liberals. So if that makes me a liberal, then that's just an association. It's not a choice. ...

I do not care about changing anybody. Nobody. I go out there to show the rest of the Americans how badly they're doing. This country has been, for about 180 years now, badly mishandled. And it's been in the wrong hands. It's been in the hands of the business interests.

He spends a portion of the article bragging about his ability to sell 250,000 tickets a year. For someone with such a dim view of this nation, it amazes me that he manages that level of interest. I know, though, that he won't be selling any of those seats to me.

I don't go in for boycotts as a rule. I do believe that people are entitled to share their opinions from whatever bully pulpit they have available to them. They are also entitled to whatever backlash they generate.

I will still watch Sean Penn movies. I will still buy U2 CDs. Statements that Penn and U2 band-members have made about America, the President of the United States, and our war efforts have offended me to some extent. None of them, though, has baldly proclaimed themselves "anti-United States." In fact, while we would disagree on many specifics, Penn and Bono have always claimed to believe greatly in the promise, the ideals, and the people of America.

Carlin's disregard (and disrespect) of America and American people earns nothing but my scorn.

I will never buy a ticket to a movie or show where Carlin will perform. I will never buy a Carlin CD. I will vigorously denounce him whenever his name is spoken in my presence. And I will tell everyone who will listen that Carlin isn't worth their time, money, or interest.

Unpatriotic is a term that I almost never use to describe a person whose views differ from my own. George Carlin, though, has earned is way to that label.

Read the interview.

Interestingly, the ability to sell so many tickets makes him a businessman, doesn't it? He's got a product, and he's charging the going rate for people to obtain it.
Just another leftist/entertainment hypocrite.

And a hypocrite who's bound and determined to show the rest of us the error of our ways, though. The arrogance is almost unbearable.

Carlin seems to pick out the US as a particularly offensive instance of something he has no use for in general -- humanity. It's hard to be sure whether he really believes the outrageous things he says, or whether he merely says them for effect.

Doesn't matter, though. Either way, he is profoundly unfunny. And it is, indeed, a shame. He used to be the funniest guy on the planet.

He sells all those tickets, he has a long-time deal with HBO, he writes books, he makes comedy albums, and he makes numerous television and radio appearances on which he pitches his appearances and his merchandise.

He has a website http://georgecarlin.com, where one can also buy George Carlin products, and he also has an interest in http://laugh.com, where there is a link to an entire page where one can "Buy George Carlin Stuff." No doubt he has made a boatload of money over the years.

For a guy who claims to hate business, he certainly is a damned good and very successful BUSINESSMAN.

His anti-United States position (which he is completely free to have and to voice in this oh-so-rotten country) also does not square with his success. He created his business empire in the United States, a country that fosters entrepreneurial endeavors and richly rewards those, such as Mr. Carlin, who are successful.

Perhaps he should consider France.

Oh come on. He's just an obnoxious asshole. By reading this article and all your comments, me as well as all of you, have given this asshole more time and energy out of our day than he deserves. Think of it this way, he is getting rich as an asshole and the quivering press who get hard ons AND shoot their wads everytime while interviewing him are definitely being paid to be assholes.

So the next time you see him on the tube or in print just whisper "ASSHOLE" and you'll feel so much better.

"ASSHOLE..."

I like to park in handicaped spaces while handicaped people make handicaped faces.

Carlin hasn't been funny in my lifetime (that I can remember anyway). At least Dennis Leary is offensive without being political (last time I checked anyway).
