resurrectionsongJanuary 19, 2004Martin Luther King, Jr.An editorial in the Rocky Mountain News today speaks volumes about why I think it so crucial that we continue to celebrate the ideas that Martin Luther King believed and espoused. While struggling so valiantly for racial equality, he never lost his faith in the American system of government or in Americans in general. His certainty and his strength marked him as a true patriot: a person who believes not only in nation, but in the bettering of that nation.
The idealistic part of me (the part I hide with careful cynicism) believes that "the arm of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice." I just have to add a little something to the end that makes it all make sense: "but the universe needs the hands of strong men and women to help the cause along at times." So, as a nation, it seems right that we spend a day honoring the legacy and the work of Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. His efforts, and the labors of so many who believed as he did, surely changed the course of our nation for the better. Oh yeah, and don't forget the fact that he is the biggest icon for civil rights for colored people, that's kind of important too, seeing as how colored people still aren't being treated as fair as us. Well i think that Martin Luther King, Jr. has had a big impact on our nation today. He not only brung us together but he made people realize that is not your skin color or what you wear. Even though its still a lot of that still out there I still thank him for what hes done. And i will continue to celebrate his holiday and know that i am thankful.
