iTunes Recommendation for the Day

I'm an on and off Bob Dylan admirer. The man has no peer when it comes to songwriters and a willingness to take chances that I can't help but respect. Still, I only own a few of his CDs and listen to them only occasionally.

A few days ago, I downloaded a live Mark Lanegan concert and found myself grooving to a few of the songs that were unfamiliar. Lanegan does quite a range of covers in his recent sets, so I knew that there was a good chance that some of the unknowns were actually someone else's songs. One of them turned out to be an unreleased Lanegan tune called "Wedding Dress" that I hope ends up on the next CD. Another, though, was Dylan's "Going, Going, Gone."

What a brilliant song. Lanegan's cover of it is excellent (although the recording is not of a professional quality). So today I ventured onto the Apple Music Store and downloaded the Dylan version (along with "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright"--which was covered either by Mike Ness or by Social Distortion, I don't remember which--and "Things Have Changed", one of the most bitter songs anyone has ever written).

Now I'm listening to the Dylan and Lanegan songs back to back and having myself a grand old time. If you have iTunes and a willingness to spend $.99, I definitely recommend downloading "Going, Going, Gone."

One of Dylan's greatest lyrics is that from "Forever Young":

May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true,
May you always do for others
And let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous,
May you grow up to be true,
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you.
May you always be courageous,
Stand upright and be strong,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy,
May your feet always be swift,
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful,
May your song always be sung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.
