You might be a South Park Republican if you...

*watch R-rated movies
*enjoy a few drinks at happy hour
*savor the navel of Britney Spears without guilt

The Wall Street Journal nails Wesley Clark today as joining Kerry in the use of obscenities in an attempt to attract young voters. While it's funny that Clark is quoted by AP as telling voters he's going to "kick the s*!t out of them," referring to anyone questioning his patriotism and military record, it's also embarrassing that our nation's most dignified political candidates keep thinking that F-Bombs will make them cool and likable.

The better part of the WSJ synopsis was the reference to the demographic called "South Park Republicans." This demographic is offered as the target of the Dems cussin'. It's a new term to me, so I read the article and was inspired to share it with others. Like the author, I've always been frustrated with the misguided idea of Republicans all being old, white, wealthy, conservative, close-minded men. The electorate is obviously more diverse than this stereotype, yet dems and liberals keep fighting this evil boogey man and republicans keep winning elections.

The WSJ blurb concludes, "One imagines Wes Clark as Eric Cartman, shouting, "Respect my authori-tah!" Somehow, though, something gets lost in the translation. What's cute for a fat cartoon eight-year-old seems somehow beneath the dignity of a 59-year-old military man."

Find out if you're a South Park Republican.

I count myself among the South Park Republicans, but (so?) I sure as hell wouldn't vote for Eric Cartman.

I'm fairly certain I qualify, somehow...

Huh? Have you seen _Patton_?

I haven't read the article (I only have WSJ access at work), but as I understand it, being a "South Park Republican" is more than swearing at election attendants on your way to fill in the oval for George W. Bush. SPRs are, in general, "socially liberal" - they're more likely to enjoy modern/abstract art, accept "non-traditional" relationships, and favor personal liberty vs. establishment of religion. Was the Journal article really so shallow?

In fairness to the WSJ, it only referenced a "South Park Republican" article that was published by Tech Central Station online in Oct 2002. The reference was made in their daily "Best of the Web" e-newsletter round-up. Nobody, including me, is claiming that Wes Clark is an SPR. They are only humorously suggesting that the demographic may be an explanation of the new Democratic Tourett's Syndrome.

DTS. I like that.

Change "savor the navel of Britney Spears without guilt" to "savor the sculpted pecs of Collin Ferrell witout guilt" and I'm in.
