resurrectionsongOctober 29, 2003Cool. Very Very Cool.I'm one of those folks that believe that effective missile defense systems will ultimately be created and deployed by the US. I think those systems will keep us safe, will keep countries like North Korea (who seem so bent on developing systems that could reach the US) from attacking us with long-range nuclear weapons, and are the natural evolution of defensive weapons systems. And aside from that, I think it's cool. I admit it: laser cannons are freakin' cool.
I remember reading about the successful artillery shell shoot down recently, and thinking how amazing that was. In fact, the ability to shoot down an artillery shell in mid-flight seems even more amazing to me than shooting down a missile. It amazes me to think that some of these things are near-future technologies, not something that will happen 100 years from now. Posted by zombyboy at October 29, 2003 12:10 PM | TrackBackComments
I've been a big fan of this kind of stuff since the first space opera stuff I read as a 5/6th grader. I also know that this stuff gives you an advantage for a time. Then someother technique is used to counter. Oh, and then your opponents have it so your cruise missiles aren't effective any longer. But, I think even more interesting is the right angle rifle a little furthar down the article. This could dramatically change the dynamics of individual combat especially in urban settings but also for the poor dude who used to have to be the one to stick his head over the rock to see if anyone was there. Also, apply to urban police ineractions. Posted by: Steve at October 29, 2003 01:49 PMI know--and that bendy rifle seems so obvious, really. And, yeah, you know I have visions of Robert Heinlein novels in my head whenever I read these things. It makes me want to go read... Posted by: zombyboy at October 29, 2003 02:06 PMPost a comment
