resurrectionsongOctober 28, 2003Avs NewsThe Colorado Avalanche retired Patrick Roy's jersey tonight in a touching, if typically schmaltzy, ceremony. The Avs this year are looking a little bi-polar. On any given night, they might score 6 and give up 1, or the numbers could just as easily be reversed. Well, tonight, against Calgary, the Avs rewarded Roy with a win on his very special night. Congratulations to the Avs, and here's to the greatest goalie to ever play the game. Posted by zombyboy at October 28, 2003 10:18 PM | TrackBackComments
here's to the greatest goalie to ever play the game. Perhaps not for long. Have you considered the young man Martin Brodeur? He also has three Cup wins now, and his stats are on par with Roys. Of course, he's not flashy or cocky, so he'll probably never be "considered" as good as Roy. Posted by: bryan at October 29, 2003 08:03 AMHe has a chance to get there--but he has a few years to go before his stats match up to Roy's in the total wins, total playoff wins, and longevity. Patty's influence on other goalies has been remarkable, too. Brodeur has the opportunity--we'll just see what happens. Posted by: zombyboy at October 29, 2003 09:54 AMBut he's already matched Roy in the only stat that matters to a hockey player: number of times your name is on the cup. ;-) Posted by: bryan at October 29, 2003 02:02 PMHeh. Not quite yet--Roy has 4. Posted by: zombyboy at October 29, 2003 02:04 PMMy bad, I thought they were both stuck at three. Ah, well. he's only been in the league 11 years, and he's already got 368 wins in 673 games. If he can keep up his averages for another 5 years, he'll leave Roy in the dust. Which is saying a lot, but not considering how consistently good he's been. And he's only 31! Of course, my personal bets are on Marty Turco of the Dallas Stars. I think he'll really be a class player, but he stayed in college 4 years, while Roy was out in the pros. The best part of Roy's retirement - obviously for a stars fan - is that he's retired! :-D Posted by: bryan at October 29, 2003 02:51 PMI like Turco, but I don't think he'll do it. If someone does (who's playing now), it'll be Brodeur. Right now, I think Brodeur has pretty good odds of breaking most of those recordes. I actually like watching any of them play--and I'll miss watching Roy play, although I completely understand your feelings on the subject. Hockey is becoming one of my favorite sports, though, just because watching some of the best players on ice can be so amazing. Posted by: zombyboy at October 29, 2003 02:54 PMPost a comment
