Concert Report

What a concert. What a beautiful, wonderful, loud concert.

The first opening band, Millionaire, was as derivative as they come. I spotted everything from Mudhoney to Stabbing Westward in their sound, all topped off with some of the most energetic, painful dancing from the lead singer that you could possibly imagine.

In short, I loved 'em. An odd recipe that doesn't sound so tasty, yet they entertained the hell out of me.

The next band, The Distillers, were something easily forgotten. Sounding like a Hole clone (without the bad parts), they also managed to be completely and utterly blank. Boring.

Then, of course, Queens of the Stone Age. Powerful, loud, fast, energetic, interesting, funny, and good. Three singers: Josh sings most of the songs, a jaunty sound even with the angriest lyrics. Nick sings occasionally, bringing some of the most powerful lead screaming you'll ever hear--and his bass is unmatched.

And then, about six songs into the thing, out comes Lanegan. Lanegan's voice is a known quantity: deep, strong, resonant. His stage presence, though, needs to be seen to be understood.

When he walks on stage and grabs the mike and the mike stand, the songs suddenly have meaning. He brings this incredibly heavy vibe with him, shrouded in cigarette smoke and, seemingly, always wearing black. His voice, his focused eyes, his presence is commanding.

Yes, it was a good night at the Fillmore.

Didn't like the Distillers, eh? One of my favorite bands of late, but I've never seen them live. I wonder if they are just monotonous (I can believe that, they have one basic sound), if your desire to see Queens and Lanegan colored your opinion, or if your general bad taste kicked in.

Guess we'll never know, but comparing them to Hole is interesting. The lead singer's voice may be a bit Lovelike, but otherwise I don't hear it.

I'm gonna go backwards:

Yeah, I knew. I just don't care so much. It's in the realm of not terribly relevant.

As to the sound, I haven't heard them recorded, just this show live, and everyone in the general area agreed that they sounded like a Hole rip-off. It was definitely monotonous. Maybe the recordings are better than the live show, but I certainly wouldn't pay to see them.

As for taste, well, I'll just leave that alone.

Finally, I always hope the openers are good. I walked away wanting to get a Millionaire CD--and last time I saw the Queens, I went and picked up a Trail of Dead CD the next day.

The Distillers, though, just didn't seem to thrill anyone--and sort of neutral feeling on the subject was about the nicest thing I heard anyone say about them.

I still don't think they're bad. I just don't think they're very good.
