What People Won't Do For Peace

Well, that sort of begs the question: what won't some people do for peace? Fighting and truly sacrificing are right out, but exhibitionism is always in high demand.

Yoko Ono has proved once again that she's prepared to bare all for peace, by inviting the audience at a Paris show to cut off her clothes.

John Lennon's widow asked each member of the 200-strong audience to cut off a piece of her clothing and send it to a loved one. And her son Sean was the first onto the stage at the Ranelagh Theatre, snipping off a small piece of her skirt.

Each member of the crowd followed, one by one, until Yoko was left wearing just her underwear, with one bra strap severed.

The 70-year-old said the work was intended as a plea for peace and hope in these fearful times. By allowing people to approach her with scissors, she was trying to demonstrate that we can trust each other.

"I was just here to say imagine world peace and to say I love you," she said afterwards. "Let's create a peaceful world. I'm hoping these things will help."

The show, entitled Cut Piece, was a recreation of an identical performance Yoko staged in Japan in 1964 and New York in 1965. And it seems to have been equally popular in Paris, as she left to a standing ovation.

Ah, yes, the empty, useless, narcissistic gesture is always in order with the peace crowd. They may not be willing to put themselves between the citizenry and the desolation of war, but they're always willing to throw their bloated egos right on stage in hopes of showing the rest of us just how darned much they care.
