S is for Superb
As in, I was originally going to put this link to Yoder's place into the "S" post below, but felt that I wouldn't be doing her post justice. For those of us who spent the last week in some level of contemplation of 9/11, this comes as a fresh view. Especially the fist half of it.
It was not a good day, but it was a good day to be in the Navy. I feel blessed, looking back, to have been where I was--in service, however limited, of my country--when we were attacked. I have been reading people's stories of September 11, and of the helplessness and the fear they felt that day, along with the shock and the horror and the anger. I was spared the feeling that there was nothing I could do. I couldn't stop the towers from falling, I couldn't stop the Pentagon from burning, I couldn't keep the passengers on Flight 93 from having to make the choice to sacrifice themselves on a field in Pennsylvania.
But once it was done, I could damn well do something about it. I was part of the fighting force that would punish those responsible. I was part of the fighting force that would protect this nation, and all we hold dear, from those who would seek to destroy us.
And I was proud--so proud--to be there, where I could, where I would, make a difference.
Yes.
