resurrectionsongAugust 29, 2003Manslaughter Charge for Representative JanklowThis from the Washington Post:
When I was quite a bit younger, I had a motorcycle accident somewhat similar to this one. While I was driving down Colfax, just short of the I-225 underpass (Denver residents will know the place), a car coming off of the highway failed to stop for the red light. The driver stopped in the middle of the road--and, being the dumb ass youngster that I was, I figured that he'd say put. Instead of stopping, I angled to go around him. Well, he didn't stay put, he started to go again when I was about forty feet away. A short skid later, and my bike's front tire hit his front quarter panel. I flew through the air, landed on my hands and knees, and rolled around a bit. I immediately got up and went after the bastard. He poked his head out of my car, looked at me, said, "Oh, you're okay," and took off. I won't bore you with details, but that's when the pain hit. I was anything but alright--I had broken a foot and both of my wrists (one being a compound fracture) and destroyed an almost new Led Zeppelin t-shirt. I didn't have health insurance, and only carried liability on the bike. My world changed pretty dramatically. But I lived, I worked my ass off, and all my parts work reasonably well again. What Janklow did was criminal. Literally. I feel for the family and friends of the dead biker, and I hope Janklow's sentence (anything other than a guilty verdict will be a horrible miscarriage of justice) is a long one. Get his tag number? Posted by: McGehee at August 30, 2003 03:43 AMNo, but some nice people chased him and got it for me. He turned out to work part time as a bag boy for King Soopers, had no insurance, and was dumb as a stump. I ended up getting something like 25 bucks from him in money orders, then I just let it go. Long story, but I had other priorities by the time the case went to court. Posted by: zombyboy at August 30, 2003 08:38 AMThat's terrible. Always cringey reading crash stories from fellow riders. I read them far too often... I've somehow managed to avoid the worst of it so far, despite some pretty dumb antics in the past. I agree totally about Janklow. Let's see justice done in this case. Posted by: Kevin White at September 1, 2003 12:21 PMRepresentative Janklow is just one tiny point of the emense problem in the USA with drivers. The majority of drivers are NOT cognizant of motorcyclists. The few who are have had close calls on a bike or know people killed by carless drivers. I'm not saying ALL drivers are unresponsible but most are, because they do not drive with the conscience thought that there are motorcycles out there. They see the other trucks and cars BUT, they forget we, Motorcyclists, are on the road too. The Vast majority of motorcyclists that are on the road know of this danger that most other vehichles are totally forgetful about us untill there are close calls. These close calls happen far too often. Representative Janklow is just one tiny point of the emense problem in the USA with drivers. The majority of drivers are NOT cognizant of motorcyclists. As someone with diabetes, though not perfect or always with "good numbers," I am keenly aware that it is my responsibility to KNOW where my sugar is BEFORE I do anything that could harm me or another person. I've seen no comments on his checking his own blood sugar. Perhaps this will be an education for many of us. Had not even thought of it from the perspective of motorcyclists. Looks like his "defense" is harming many people. Posted by: Jill Tiffany at December 8, 2003 06:48 AMThis SOB Janklow thought that he was above the law. With such a light sentence it turns out he was right. Here is a post from a chopper site: "you dont spose this shitball got cut some slack because he was sentenced by a judge he appointed when he was governor??, nahhhh that wouldnt happen would it, this piece of shit even got out on work release during the day, so he spent what, 8 hours a day locked up, i bet with all his buds in jail they never even locked him up at night. i'm glad there are a few of you who agree with me on this one, i got roasted on another bord over this topic, these other morons were talking about boycotting sturgis over this, the people of south dakota had nothing to do with this assholes accident!! they found him guilty ( which i thought they would never do) its not theyre fault some lowlife judge didnt have enough balls to give him the sentence he deserved. this subject really chaps my ass!!! hopefully this shitball will get whats coming to him, either in this life or when he meets his maker, everyone ride safe!!!!!!!!!!!! peace."
