resurrectionsongAugust 21, 2003Pantheon of Cool NicknamesSo, they captured Chemical Ali, which isn't really one of the world's greatest nicknames, although it probably beats the snot out of "Zombyboy." What makes a cool nickname? First, let's get this out of the way, I'm not sure that women can have cool nicknames--it just sounds goofy when women get nicknames that are supposed to be impressive. Women's nicknames are, by their nature, cute, at best. I think the issue is that we actually expect women to grow up at some point in their lives, but that men are always assumed to be in a state of near-childhood for their entire existence. Nicknames don't really sound so great on grown-ups. Now that we've narrowed it down to boy names, what makes a good nickname for little Zomby, Jr.? There needs to be a flow to it--kind of like good advertising, sometimes words work together and sometimes they don't. The first test of a nickname is how easily it comes to mind and how easily it flows from the tongue. This is hard to define, and is somewhat defined by personal taste. For example, I'm not a big fan of things like "The Big Smooth" or "The Toy Cannon." That's just trying too hard. Nicknames do get bonus points if they drip with testosterone and menace. "The Snake." "Freak." " The Dominator." These are very good nicknames. In fact, aggression is good. "The Bus" and "The Nigerian Nightmare" will always have a place in my heart. Another way to make a good nickname is to imply a transcendent, otherworldly level of skill or grace. "The Wizard." "Magic." "Doctor J." "Sweetness." These are all names to challenge the rest of the world--prove to me I'm not the best, they're saying. Equal mixtures of cockiness and skill, combined with just the right nickname, are the keys to media immortality. Then there are those that just make you feel good about the guy. "The Babe." "Shoeless Joe Jackson." "Sleepy." "Bo." These are guys that you'd want to invite to your place for a beer. And that brings us back to Nope, just not cool. What was I talkin' about?
