Because God Told Me So...

According to FoxNews, a woman was pulled over in Ohio for breast feeding her child while driving. This is funny enough (not in a real "ha ha" way, but in a "no freakin' way" way), but the story gets better.

She acknowledges breast-feeding while driving and says she did nothing wrong.
Apparently she belongs to a religious sect that doesn't believe in driver's licenses and such. So, to her child endangerment charge, she also gets a lovely little driving without a license charge. It gets better.

Her husband declared that the faith that they share makes him responsible for all of her actions, and therefor he should be in charge of punishing her.

"I directed her to do everything she did that day. ... Under our faith, she obeys me," he said during a break.

No. Wait. It gets better.

The couple — who lack a marriage license but claim to be married — belong to the First Christian Fellowship for Eternal Sovereignty (search), a religious group with a history of challenging the government.

The organization, which pledges allegiance to Jesus Christ, was founded in Henderson, Nev., in the 1990s. Barnhill says he is a minister in the fellowship with 650 followers.

And sometimes I wonder why people get a bad impression of religion...

Read the story.

I will put aside I am a mother of 3 children and have been driving since I was 16.
I can honestly say the thought of breast feeding and driving never crossed my mind. I can't even image how it would be done sucessfully-which is why the woman was pulled over. It's a hard story to comprehend. The religion part or the obey doesn't even bother me its the breast feeding and driving part.

Hell, every part of it bothers me, if you want to know the truth...

Z, you missed all of the best parts! The town that this occured in, Ravenna, is one town over from my sister, about 15 min. from me. Needless to say, we've been hearing a lot about this in the news. Here are some highlights:

1) The woman tried to claim that the court had no jurisdiction over her because, according to her religion, her husband is responsible for her (as you pointed out). She tried to get the charges dropped because of this.

2) Being unsuccessful, the couple then tried to force the court to have her husband charged instead of her, for the same reasons.

3) Being unsuccessful at this, the woman fired her public defender saying that his advice was contrary to their religion.

4) The woman will only speak publicly when her husband gives her permission to speak.

5) The couple went so far as to say that the applicable laws don't actually exist!

6) My favorite quotes are:
Social Security numbers are the "mark of the beast."
Paying income tax is called "Satan's tithing"
Birth dates are "hearsay"

7) And last, let us not forget that the woman refused to stop for the police.
