My, What a Big, Uh, Camera You Have...

Shaun Irving built a camera. A big, big camera.

Using the same principles that children use to build pinhole cameras (usually out of one of those round Quaker Instant Oats containers), Irving converted the cargo area of an old mail delivery truck into a camera that takes giant-sized pictures. How big are the pictures? The photo paper he buys comes in 4' x 100' rolls. Why did he do this?

Some guys dream about playing third base for the Braves. Others want to edit comic books. I, on the other hand, wanted to build a giant camera out of a delivery truck.

Just how big is it? It takes negatives 3,000 times bigger than most cameras. It's big enough for 24 people to stand in. In fact, it's one of the two largest cameras in the world.

My friends thought I was crazy; many still do. I quit my full-time work to make it happen, spending my entire savings along the way. But building Peanut has been my dream for the past six years.

And I wasn't about to let sanity keep me from at least trying.

I'm not sure what is more disturbing: the fact that he built a gigantic pinhole camera, the fact that he actually took time to name it, or the fact that he named it "Peanut."

If it were "CamZilla" or something like that, I can see, but "Peanut?"

Maybe because your dad didn't win free tickets to a monster truck rally that happened to feature TruckZilla, which made such an impression on you that you now think "-zilla" is an acceptable suffix to denote largeness?
