Quick Liberia Note

Troops are going to Liberia, and that is, in my mind, a good thing.

"The immediate task of the (West African peacekeeping) force is to reinforce a cease fire and begin to create conditions where humanitarian assistance can be provided to the Liberian people," it [a White House statement] said.

The statement reiterated Bush's insistence that Liberian President Charles Taylor "must leave."

This is a good cause. It could help block the creation of another state that turns a blind eye to terrorist camps and destabilizes its neighbors. Just as importantly, it will help stop the carnage that has plagued Liberia.

I'm glad we're going, and I certainly think it's the right decision.

President Bush needs to address the nation, though, on the subject. Explain to the people why we are involving ourselves in the country and precisely what the mission of the American troops will be. He also needs to outline a path for solving long-term Liberian problems--a solution that justifies the danger to American troops.

Read the story in USA Today.

If we're going for humanitarian reasons only, I'm not sure I agree with us being there. However, if this is a means of securing Liberia from a Muslim incursion and the establishment of a terror supporting government, then I suppose it can be justified. Keep in mind though that the president of Liberia is a "Christian." He's a bigger problem than the Muslims, right?

Am I becoming anti-Muslim? I hope not. It's just that, well...never mind.
