Because Not All the News is Bad News

Not all the news coming out of Iraq is bad, not all the portents for success are bad, and not everyone in the world hates the Big Bad United States. Sometimes, when I'm reading all the stories on Mother Jones, Indymedia, and Village Voice, I sort of forget that.

The Christian Science Monitor may not be the biggest stronghold of conservative thought in the world, but they do make an effort at being somewhat balanced and fair in their reporting. An article today explains how some Iraqis still view Americans as heroes.

Back at the Baghdad church, Abdul Masih said, "Give my peace to Mr. Bush.

"I love him," he added. "He saved us from the criminal."

And in Sulaymaniyah a little girl trailed after the Americans as they left a restaurant, shyly smiling and repeating over and over, "Thank you. Thank you."

It may not sell newspapers, but the American public needs to remember the people we've helped--and reject the anti-war notion that what we've done was wrong. No, it's not all light and sunshine, but there is hope and a new start in a country that had lived too long in the shadow of a dictator.

Read the story in the CSMonitor.
