More Dennis Miller Love

Alternet is running a negative story on Dennis Miller. The article comes off as a disgruntled look at one of Hollywood's stars that doesn't tow the columnist's political line. At one point, the author notes how Miller had once been one of the biggest critics of the GOP and conservatives in general; the feeling that the author seems to have is one of betrayal. How, possibly, could Miller have gone over to the dark side?

Note to the author: maybe he just grew up. Maybe September 11 caused him a moment for reflection.

If you listen to Miller, he still has a sharp barb for overly authoritarian politicians, would-be theocrats, and anyone who can't keep up their end of the conversation. His conservatism is streaked heavily with a libertarian bent (and a grand stream of vulgarities sure to piss of the moralists). He's hardly become the Pat Robertson of the stand-up circuit.

Of course, that just made me love Dennis all the more. A few highlights:

"I cannot tell you how proud watching that war coverage makes me. I know a lot of people are saying that they think that it's, that you know what we're doing is imperialistic. I watch the way we handle ourselves over there and I've never felt more patriotic in my life."

"Michael Moore simultaneously represents everything I detest in a human being and everything I feel obligated to defend in an American. Quite simply, it is that stupid moron's right to be that utterly, completely wrong."

It's fun to watch someone squirming when one of "theirs" becomes one of "ours."

Read the whole thing.

Even in his Republican-bashing days, Miller never struck me as a liberal. Rather, he came off as someone who really was a Republican on almost all of the issues, but who happened to dislike Republicans personally.

I always thought he was a right-leaning libertarian.

Hell, all I know is he's always been funny and he's fightin' in my corner right now.

I agree that when you're a young republican, it's difficult to identify with older reps of the party, even to the point of embarrassment because they're easy targets for the left. In 96, the last person I wanted to vote for was Dole (he should have made the Viagra commercials sooner for a few extra sympathy votes). Fortunately, I think republicans are smarter about candidates now.

So, I'm not surprised either by Dennis Miller's emergence on the right. His brand of comedy and the rants fall right in line with the demand for self-reliance and personal accountability found in core republican values. I'm extremely amused to see the left quaking over Miller openly choosing his side. Give me Dennis Miller over Al Franken or Michael Moore every time.

I for one always thought that the guy was funny. But what's funnier to me is what happened with the whole Rush Limbaugh / ABC football thing. Limbaugh had apparently auditioned to do color commentary for ABC Monday night football, and he would certainly have made a good host, given that he spends half his show talking about football anyway. but ABC abruptly killed the idea, according to rumor at the behest of ultra-Liberal Micael Eisner. They got Miller instead, thinking him a good liberal.

I wonder what they think of that decision now?

Actually, I guess I know. They chose potty mouth (but funny) Jimmy Kimmel as a replacement.

As a long time Miller fan I can tell you he had a major switch as have I in supporting his career. I just wish he had come clean on why he had this revelation. I just can't watch him anymore. He's obviously fighting demons, rooted where I don't know. I'm not sure he knows. I think he's like much of america, mostly east coast folks. He's scared. Very little good comes from fear and sadly his career will suffer from his inability to deal with his problems.

Cheers

I, too, mourn the betrayal of Dennis Miller. I recognize his right to turn conservative, to support Bush and the war. It's the liberal-bashing I can't stand: to me, a sign of easy, lazy, follow-the-party-line-and-damn-everyone-else conservatism. Dennis used to be an equal-opportunity basher. But these days, for him, the right wing can do no wrong.

BTW, I think he's scared too, and especially shaken by the loss of his two jobs in 2002. Yet, see the link to my comments about his most recent appearance on Jay Leno's show.

I always thought he was boring, but at least he had half a brain.

Sad to see that he's managed to toss that away, as well.

Thanks, Liam. At least Melanie had something interesting to say.

Dennis is funny as hell! At least he isn't politically correct anymore. He is a pro-choice, pro-gay rights Republican. Hardly a hard right winger.

And it is nice to hear ONE person in Hollywood who isn't an American hating, pro-Marxist, A.C.L.U. and PETA member!

Yeah Dennis! I'm not a Republican but thank you for not bashing America! What a concept! Someone in Hollywood who LOVES America passionately and doesn't HATE it passionately. I.E. Bill Maher, Michael Moore and Janeane "ugly, bitter fat girl" Garofalo.

:)

Dennis is smart enough to realize that liberals are NOT always right. Yikes! What a concept.

But no liberal can admit their ideas have failed. Like the homeless problem in San Francisco for example. They just want to give the homeless more and more money and then they wonder why the problem gets worse?

Dennis also realizes a pro-choice Republican like Rudy Giuliani saved New York City. Even before 9/11.

He got the crime rate way down, cleaned the city up, made it safe for people to walk around in at night. And the idiot liberals HATED him for this. Why?

Do they want bums all over the place, crime, streets not to be clean? Aaa, I guess so. Right on Dennis!

You are a funny mofo and a comedy stud! It is SO fun to piss of politically correct liberals. They get so mad when they don't control everything and everyone's minds!
