Not Quite a Tragedy

According to ABC News, Matthew Lovett, the teen accused of masterminding a plan to go on a killing spree with a few friends in Oaklyn, NJ, left a very interesting note that might explain his actions.

"I thought you'd like to know that I am a warrior, I am fighting for mankind's freedom. Freedom from this society," the letter said. "You best be grateful, my original plan was to kill you all … But I decided that'd be too messy. But it wouldn't bother me any."

So, he had a messianic complex of sorts (he also signs the letter "the antichrist") and an unhealthy obsession with The Matrix. In The Matrix, Neo is fighting against the enslavement of the human race. What was Matthew rising up against?

The rambling note police said was left by Matthew Lovett touched on such typical teenage complaints as cleaning his room and refusing to get a job...

Ah, yes...

I always hated chores, too.

Let's just be thankful that these kids were even more incompetent than the bastards from Columbine. Initially, I was planning to ignore these guys--they didn't get around to killing anyone, and, in fact, couldn't even manage to hijack a car. Then I started hearing about how much these kids were teased.

Please.

This is for the high school students that might be contemplating their own mini-apocalypse:

  1. Just because someone teases you, you do not have the right to shoot them.
  2. No, not even if they tease you a lot.
  3. Just because someone is popular, and you are distinctly not popular, there is no cause to seek their death and destruction.
  4. I'm sorry your life hasn't been easy. That's the way it is for most of us--only we don't load up the guns and search for the nearest clock tower.
  5. Things get better later. Honest.
  6. If you stop acting like a freak, maybe they'll stop treating you like a freak. If, however, you choose to continue to be a freak, understand the natural tendency of the non-freaky to react negatively. This is the way of things.
  7. Don't worry: some day, you, too, will have sex. Probably.
  8. Now, put down the overwhelming angst and stop acting like such a self-absorbed asshole. Go to school, prepare for life, and go watch a movie with gratuitous nudity.

Read the ABC story.

I don't see that much "Matrix" quality abou this. Maybe "Carrie", but that would be too obscure, eh?
